Wikipedia’s earliest version, launched in 2001, ran on a small Perl-based engine called UseModWiki. However, UseModWiki lacked crucial features for a rapidly growing, multilingual encyclopedia, such as support for large numbers of users, database scalability, and namespaces and specialized pages.
